LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) is intended to help low income households with their electricity needs. Since gas is considered an obsolete resource, this will not apply, but if the residence relies on electricity for most or all of their resources, then this program will be a benefit. Application of the service will cover up to 6 months worth of service. This means if the average electric bill was $50/month, then they will receive an energy assistance credit of $300. While this may not sound like a lot, it is a significant amount of help for those those that need it most.
To apply for LIHEAP, one will log into the HHS website, and go to Social Welfare > Services > LIHEAP. From there, they will apply for service, and give permission to HHS to allow them to review your electric bill. This will determine how much the applicant will receive. If approved, the credit will go to the electric company to apply to the customer’s bill directly. The applicant can go to Social Welfare > Services > LIHEAP after they applied to learn the status of their application.
