SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Progam) is a program that will help a household with food assistance. As with all social welfare programs, this program is handled by HHS. To apply for SNAP, one would have to log into their account, and then go to Social Welfare > Services > SNAP. From there, the applicant will apply for benefits. The application will require the NIN of everyone in the household even as a household of 1. An NIN can only be applied to one social welfare program. This means if there are separated parents with joint custody, then only one parent can apply for SNAP for a child. The other parent will not be able to apply for the child again. If an attempt for applying for benefits with someone that is already receiving SNAP, the application will be denied, and the applicant will have to meet with a case worker. If the initial person applied illegally, then they can be charged with fraud.
SNAP is used for grocery food items only. These items could be sold in a grocery store, or online. In order to acquire food at a store, the applicant will need to acquire a SNAP card before they can use their benefits. The resource must be used at least once every quarter. If not, then benefits can be terminated, and the applicant will have to re-apply all over again. To acquire a SNAP card, the applicant will have to go to an HHS office where they will receive their SNAP card, and be required to provide s 4-6 digit PIN number. Only the applicant and trusted shoppers should have this PIN number. The applicant is responsible for all purchases that were verified with a PIN. To increase security, the SNAP card will not have a magnetic strip. Instead, they will use an EMV chip, and the card number will not be on the card. If the applicant needs the card number, they can go to Social Welfare > Services > SNAP and on that page, they will see their SNAP card, and be able to provide that number for online stores.
Since the card has an EMV chip, there is no magnetic strip to fade, and wear away. This means that the card is likely not need replacing. As mentioned, the card is for grocery food only. The card can not be used to acquire restaurant food. For those that are homeless will have a better option by going to soup kitchens to get a proper daily meal. The homeless person will be able to dial 211 for National Charity Services to get location of nearby soup kitchens.
